Okay it’s time to answer the number one question I get asked…..be the coffee -what does that even mean?
In
my new book, Subsequently Inevitable the main character, Summer is
reviewing all the possibilities her life holds. Depending on her own
free will, Summer explores what happens if the party-girl doesn’t get
her act together. What happens if she keeps choosing toxic
relationships…what happens if she stays in unhappy
relationships for the sake of the kids or out of the fear of being
alone…what happens if she gets the career and man of her dreams….what if
she ends up alone? Ultimately, it is evident, there are always trade
offs, nothing ever fits neatly into a box.
As each life alternative
comes to an end, Summer’s guiding angel counsels her. The running theme
is getting out of one‘s comfort zone is vital for spiritual growth - the
worse thing we can do is play it safe. What we choose is not
necessarily the crucial aspect, but how we respond to our environment or
circumstances.
One of the many analogies the guiding angel uses is
the potato, egg and the coffee. They each react to boiling water
differently. The potato becomes soft and weak, and the egg becomes hard
and brittle. The coffee takes the boiling water and makes it it’s own -
it IMPROVES the boiling water. How we live our lives is a delicate
balancing act, with an objective to leave the world enlightened, not
jaded or drowning in regret.
It‘s easier said than done. I
intentionally made the outcomes surprisingly unpredictable. The grass is
not always greener and unfortunately we can be our own worst enemy. In
the end, what matters are the simple things and it doesn’t necessarily
play out how you’d expect.
We are conditioned to be polite, don’t
rock the boat and treat people the way we like to be treated, yet “bad”
things still happen to good people. It’s easy almost logical to become
bitter and hardened to the injustice, or become defeated and allow
others to trample us. However, we always have the choice to turn tragedy
into triumph and BE THE COFFEE.
Subsequently Inevitable is available
in paperback, hardcover and ebook, with an audiobook out soon. I like
to warn people that despite including a depth of emotions and
experiences, the reader is frequently confronted by explicit content….so
this an 18+ book and would ordinarily carry a parental advisory label!
